If you’re getting ready to move homes, then you’re in the right place!
Being an estate agent, we've picked up a few tips and tricks to help the process of moving home as smoothly as possible.
Read on to make sure you’re prepared for your next move.
Just start!
When you know you’ll soon be on the move, start packing things you can do without before the move. The earlier you start, the better.Identify the items you hardly use, like that food processor that's sat at the back of your cupboard for years... Keep your day-to-day items to last.
Create your own checklist to help keep you organised and on track.
Declutter before you pack
Moving is the perfect opportunity to declutter your life. Don't make the mistake of packing items you no longer need or want.Take the time to sort through your belongings and consider donating, selling, or disposing of things you don't use or wear anymore. Ask yourself questions like ‘How often have I used this in the last year?’, ‘Do I still enjoy wearing this item?’ or ‘Does it have any sentimental value?’.
By decluttering, you will not only make your move easier, as you have less to pack, but you’ll also give yourself a fresh start in your new home.
Research moving companies carefully
If you're hiring a removal firm, take the time to research and choose a reputable company. Don't just go for the cheapest option – read reviews, ask for recommendations, and verify the company's credentials to ensure you're entrusting your belongings to professionals.Label your boxes clearly
There’s nothing worse than having to root through several boxes until you’ve found the item you wanted. Proper labelling is crucial for an organised move. Clearly mark each box with its contents and the room it belongs in. This simple step will save you time and frustration when unpacking in your new home. Plus, it means you can immediately place the box in the right room or area of your new home.Have a ‘pack last, open first’ box
You’ll want your essentials as soon as you’re at your new home. This might include cleaning items so that you can give your new place a deep clean. It could also include items, such as your kettle, cutlery, mugs, plates etc. so that you don’t have to search through all other boxes and bags before finding everything you need to make yourself a cuppa ro a snack.Having a ‘pack last, open first’ box will help make your first night in your new place much more comfortable and relaxed.
Make sure you have enough boxes
Ask your friends, family or colleagues if they have any spare moving boxes, shoe boxes or sturdy bags to pack up all your things. For any valuable or fragile items, you may want to buy some good quality boxes and bubble wrap to make sure these items are well protected.Remember, when it comes to fragile items, there's no such thing as too much padding!
Don't forget to notify important parties
Make sure to inform relevant parties about your change of address well in advance. This includes utility providers, the post office, banks, and any subscriptions or memberships you have. Forgetting this step can lead to missed bills or other important communications. If you’re worried that you may have missed changing your address for one or two subscriptions, why not set yourself up with a mail forwarding service? That way, you can be sure that you won’t miss a thing and have the opportunity to see where you may have forgotten to change your address.
Be realistic about time and effort
Many people underestimate the time and effort required for a move. Be realistic about what you can accomplish and don't hesitate to ask for help from friends, family, or professional movers, if needed.Double-check everything before leaving
Before you shut the door for the last time, do a final walk-through of your old home. Check every room, cupboard, and storage space to ensure you haven't left anything behind. It's also a good idea to have someone else do a second check – a fresh pair of eyes can spot things you might have missed. After the move
Yay - you’ve done it. The move is done, now you can start unpacking and settle into your new surroundings. You may want to consider changing your locks, so finding a reputable locksmith is key, double-check if your new home insurance policy requires it.We hope that these tips will set you up for a smooth moving experience.
